I created a Visio stencil with all the important parts of a Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server architecture. Several people have seen me use this and have. Here are some Visio stencils from different vendors to use for making a diagram for Citrix, RES, Microsoft and VMware. See the links below. Citrix Visio Stencils (XenApp, VDI, Netscaler, XenDesktop, EdgeSight, Access Gateway, Citrix Delivery Center items, Roles).
When I was at the Microsoft MVP summit a few weeks ago, I got a copy of a pretty cool wall chart from Microsoft called 'Windows Server 2008 R2: Remote Desktop Services Component Architecture.' It was created by Microsoft employees Martin McClean, Brian Lich, and Thomas Willingham, (and, they said, completely laid out in Visio!?!).
You can download the full-size PDF from Microsoft:
The chart shows all the components that make up a Remote Desktop system, including the Session Host (TS), Virtualization Host (VDI host), the gateway, connection broker, licensing, and the web portal. This latest version of the chart also covers RemoteFX. Each component is in its own box, along information explaining how it works, setup steps, and the general flow.
I talked Thomas into giving me a whole stack of the full-size high-quality printed versions, and I'll be raffling off one of them at each of the nineteen 'Desktop Virtualization 2011' single-day seminars that I speak at this year. (The first few cities in March/April are San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, and New York City. So sign up now if you haven't yet!)
I created a Visio stencil with all the important parts of a Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server architecture. Several people have seen me use this and have asked about it, so I decided to make it available for download. This stencil includes the various server components (MetaFrame Server, IMA Data Store, Web Interface, Secure Gateway, etc.) as well as protocols (IMA, ICA, XML, HTTP) and the various Citrix server roles. It's nothing special really, but it should allow you to create diagrams faster.
You can import this stencil into Visio and use these shapes when drawing MetaFrame architecture diagrams.
Once you open it up, you'll see I have two types of objects in this stencil. I have server objects, which are useful when laying out environments with multiple servers. I also have 'role' objects, which are just little stickers that you can place onto any server to show that the server is acting in a certain role. (For example, use these 'role' objects to show that one server is acting as both the Web Interface and the Secure Gateway.)
Feel free to send me an email if you have any suggestions as to other items that I should add to the stencil.
Note: To use this stencil, you have to right-click and 'Save as...' Otherwise, Visio is, um, 'smart' enough to treat the stencil as a template and it tries to create a new Visio drawing from it, which of course is blank. Instead, save the file to your drive and open it as a stencil from within Visio.
